OK so the other day I accidently pressed the off button on my mates pc instead of the eject on the cd drive. This resulted in a non-booting machine, would reboot whilst on the black windows-loading screen. Anyway I ran chkdsk on it from the recovery console and this fixed it, it now boots up fine but it says there is no sound device even though the sound card driver is installed and reported as working fine.

Any ideas?

Ah :( Well i've fixed a few pc's with that issue and moving it sorted them. Only other thing i can think of is to disable it in the bios. boot up and remove drivers again

Indeed, uninstall device and uninstall.

Reboot entering BIOS, disable on-board sound card, save and exit.

Let Windows boot up, and check it's not in device manager, etc.

Reboot, and enable on-board sound in BIOS.

Boot into windows and install drivers unless it doesn't do it for you.

Failing the above you could spend a fiver and get a PCI sound card, that'll teach you!
