no sound from laptop (windows 8)

I have a very odd problem that i suspect is caused by some setting somewhere in the depths of the horrendous windows 8 gui. for some reason no matter what i do to any of the sound settings that i can find i am getting no sounds from anything. it was working just fine about ten minutes ago but suddenly it has all gone.

every setting that i can find tells me that i should have sound playing and i haven't (knowingly) changed anything since it was working, so if someone can think of a solution i would be most grateful.

if it helps, the laptop is an Acer Aspire V3-571G

Hmm, apparently going away to make a bacon sandwich fixed my problem, weird.

while i have the thread open, is there any way to get the middle click opening a new tab in chrome on windows 8?
