Hi guys i got A strange problem.

My brother-in-law has just given me his laptop to fix for him (spyware) and he also says it has no sound when playing a dvd or avi/mpg file. I have sorted the spyware problem but the sound issue i cannot find out whats wrong. As far as i can see the sound should be working all is enabled in control panle nothing is muted in volume control and media player is set to use direct sound output.

I have just instaled VLC and that works fine but he dosent like it and wants media player 11 working

Its got me stumped. Any ideas?

VLC has built-in codecs, therefore on most occassions you don't need anything extra to install to be able to view or listen to things that you play through it. WMP11 doesn't however, and you may need an additional codec. When you start WMP11 does it try to download any codecs? It should say if it is in the status panel inside the program.

Kinda thinking you might need an AC3 filter, which you can get from here.

i had installed FDDshow and it was working when i gave the laptop back to him but i have now got it back with no sound. its very odd never had any problems before as FDD normally covers all codecs and sound filters

He may have inadvertantly pressed F8 while in media player. This would mute the sound and keep it muted until it's pressed again.

Try pressing F8 when you're playing something and see if the sound returns :)
