no sound playing DVDs ?????

ok, Fresh install of XP SP2....
Plays MP3's no problemo....
I get Video but no sound????
Tried multiple known good DVD's same thing....
downloaded media player 11 bata.... same thing....
The properties for the DVD show video codac used, resolution ect but no sound...
I'm guessin theirs a problem with the audio codac somewhere?
It's a m8's PC using onboard AC97 (I think) sound...

Any help appreciated.

I'm wondering if it could be the mpeg codac? I can't for the life of me thing what codac is used for DVD audio, does anyone know?

just install this

specifically you will want AC3 i think for sound? I can never remember exactly what it is that is needed for DVDs (I swear it changes

)

Alternatively dont touch anything, install VLC and it should just play the dvd

It was the AC3 codac that was corrupt coz the install told me....
Thanks guys, much appreciated.
Curious as to why a fresh install of XP had corrupt files....
