No sound - possible hardware fault?

My friend's 3 years old pc have sound stopped working and I had looked at device manager, sound and audio device, volume control & mute. They are all fine and I have bought in my spare speakers, no luck.

It is Realtek AC'97 Audio which is intergrated in motherboard so could it be possible a fault?

Would it be worthwhile to get a new PCI sound card?

Sorted. It turned out to be sound driver, I have downloaded the latest and that fixed it so it must have been corrupted driver in the first place.

After thinking what to do, I just realisted that I haven't tried sound driver!
