So I've been looking into buying some surround sound kit for a little while but as a stop gap, found this monstrosity in my parent's storage shed which I thought could serve as a stop-gap until I make my mind up/finances improve.

It's a little old, so I was sceptical about it working but plugged my phone in via aux and it works fine. However, no such luck direct from my TV using red/white component cables (the only input on the 5.1 system), which is leading me to wonder if that's not a viable way to do it.

So I have HDMI out from Sky+ box to my TV (Samsung H6400) which obviously carries video and audio. Plugging the red/white component cables into my Sky+ box has worked and I get audio into the 5.1 system fine from that.

However, I won't then be able to get this audio when I watch stuff on my TV not through the Sky box - e.g. stuff from my Plex library via the Samsung plex app, or netflix.

Is there any way I can get sound output from the TV direct to the 5.1 system?

I wouldn't bother - calling it 5.1 is extremely misleading ; with no digital inputs (or 6 channel analogue inputs) it can't take a dolby digital or DTS signal nor does it have even basic dolby pro logic surround sound decoding.

Chances are the red and white composite connections on the TV are input only.

Yep that's correct, dullard moment for me. Running fine now from TV aux output, added bonus of sound control via main TV remote. Only a freebie stopgap for now, but nice to get it running
