I bought a LG HT806PH surround sound system, the main reason for buying it was to conect to my Xbox 360, which i must say is great, Battlefield 3 blows me away.
This is connected via an optical lead, as my sky box also has an optical output i thought i would try that out, connected the optical cable to the sky box and had a little red light out the cable, so that works i thought.
Connected the cable to the surround system and nothing, no sound, ahh sky settings i thought, but in sound settings (sky box) nothing to select optical,
yet on the sky help site it shows a optical setting you must select?.
Followed all they say on there web site but still no luck.
I have now connected the surround sound system to the TV as this also has a optical input, which is ok but not 5.1.

I now have bought a splitter for the optical devises i have and this works very well, so its now just a click of a switch to choose Xbox or TV!.

Anyway, any help with sky problem would be great.

In the sound settings you have the option to select stereo or Dolby D, make sure Dolby D is selected. :)

I don't know about that model, but in my onkyo receiver I have to select video from source A(hdmi) and audio from source B(optical), does your system have that available?

Are you sure that your LG system can decode a dolby digital signal? Try setting the sky box audio output to stereo to see if you get anything.

Yeah it has a Dolby prologic II sound decoder, which works with a dolby digital Xbox game very well, some great sound effects.
Yep i get a red light out the end of the optical cable and all settings on the sky box are set to stereo, and dolby d,

I just cant see what else i can do, unless i got an old sky box that needs an update?
i say that because when i went on the Sky help website it shows an option in the sound settings menu that you can select an optical input, mine dont.

Dolby prologic ii decoding takes a 2-channel signal and creates 5.1 channels from it - it's not the same as Dolby Digital. I might be on the wrong tack here, but can you go into your xbox audio settings and see if it's set to 'dolby digital' or 'digital stereo'? I can't see anything in the specs for your LG system that says it supports dolby digital, so I'm guessing your xbox audio output is set to 'digital stereo' and if so you'd need to set the sky box optical output to 'stereo' too.

If your sky box hasn't got an option to enable or disable the optical output, then I'd guess it's on all the time.

Ok, the Xbox is set to Dolby Digital 5.1
All sky settings are set to Audio Output - STEREO
Digital Audio Output - DOLBY D
Digital Audio Output Delay - 0ms

I think i need to face it.....it wont work......DOH!

Still Xbox sounds great :D

If you've tried the sky digital output as 'stereo' (and 'saved' the change) and then tried all the possible input options on the LG I can't think of what else to try. :( Back to a stereo analogue connection?

Yep it does that on the Xbox which works perfect, as soon as you plug in the optical cable into the sky box nothing, not a sound, and yet you still get a red light out of the cable.
This is always on as at night you get a red glow at the back of the sky box.

Hi there. I have the same LG surround system I use it with my sky HD through optical link. Works fine with no settings to change. I also use a toslink switch to connect ps3 again works fine. I press optical on remote and the sound comes through after about a 30second delay.

first off what type of sky box is it? sky plus white box has to be set manually to optical output on and dolby d. sky hd plus optical output is always on if you have one of those and not working try doing a system update on the sky box itself. or if you have a sky hd non plus check the sound settings for optical and make sure dolby is not being passed through hdmi instead. other then that try and borrow a friends box and see if it works.
