any help appreciated.

Is explorer definitely running? I see that the running processes lists explorer.EXE, I'm just wondering why 'EXE' is in capitals and wonder if something is amiss there. Obviously if explorer wasn't running then you would get no taskbar, or desktop icons either if you have them turned on.

Explorer is running at the moment it takes me several attemps to get the pc to start up with a taskbar

a friend had something like this, it turns out that the taskbar had been unlocked and they had moved it down off the screen. Cant remember how i got it back though!

Do you mean that sometimes when you start the PC it is there, and other times when you start your PC it isn't?

When the taskbar is not there, do you still have your desktop icons displayed?

Yes you are right somtimes it is there and other time it is not i do not see the desktop icons there when the taskbar is not there.

Go into taskmanager, and kill all instances of explorer.exe

Then, in task manager, click File > New task (Run) and type explorer. Press enter and see if it loads.

You haven't done something stupid like enabled auto hide and or increased your screen size on the monitor, moving out of view?

What happens if you press the windows key on your keyboard or do ctrl + Esc ?

start --> run --> cmd and type in "chkdsk c: /f" (without the quotes). It will tell you that it can't do it now and you'll need to reboot, or it won't be able to unload the handles (and therefore not be able to fix anything it finds) - answer yes to this.

also, start --> run --> cmd and type "sfc /scannow" - you'll need your install disk for this one.

p.s. is it home, or pro?

you're w32time errors are due to sntp not functioning correctly (don't know the exact cause, because I can't see the error itself) - but that's irrelevant to this issue.

does it happen with all users?

try creating a new account and see if it happens with that account as well - if it doesn't, it's most likely a profile problem. If this is the case, just log in with an admin account, rename your current profile (c:\documents and settings\<your user name>), log out and log back in as yourself.

You can then copy the important stuff from your old profile (like desktop folder / favourites and probably all of application data)
