No way, Colbert to be king ?

Shocking as that may seem, it's probably a better decision than replacing Larry King with that twit Piers Morgan.

Mite b cool, I like the Colbert Report so assuming he'll be using the same writers it should be good.

Bad choice. He's good at doing his "oddball comedy" stuff, he excels at his own marmite thing. He was even too edgy and bizarro for Daily Show, and both he is better outside Daily Show and the show is better without him. But Late Show need universal appeal, which Colbert will never have

Late show's current demographic is 55-dead, cbs want to lower this demographic. Colbert can likely do this. Some have said he will drop his act for the late show, I doubt this, has he ever even made public appearances not in-character, I can't think of any. I think he was widely regarded as the next host for a few weeks now, it's just official today.

He's a very sharp, funny guy but he is not a good interviewer and say what you like about Letterman, he was damn fine at interviewing his guests. I'd still watch it though, Colbert is rad.

He has done an interview where he mixed in and out, discussing the method of his character. I cant imagine he'd bring the exact same thing into this, its a unique segment. Im a fan of Fallon and Kimmel and I dont think Colbert fits as its too cutting though Kimmel is very sarcastic its laughed off constantly where Colbert I take as serious in his political critic if not the delivery.

Put it another way, would John Stewart fit as the Late show host ?

Jon Stewart would be a better fit for The Late Show. I've always seen it as a more grown up talk show and Stewart has that appeal whereas Stewart is the younger hipper host especially when he's in character.

but Stewart getting the role would mean no more Daily Show and that simply cannot be so Colbert and his Nation can take the spot as far as I'm concerned :p

When the colbert report is on form though it's streets ahead of the daily show as a comedy though. Daily show always tries to maintain the underlying seriousness of the issue behind the satire.

Colbert's interviews are always funnier than Stewart's too. I don't think Jon would be commanding enough as a host, he gets walked over quite easily, you only have to look at his Bill O'Reilly interviews to see how enraged he gets. I don't suppose he would get to pick his guests on the Late show either.

Really Bill O'Reilly would enrage anyone, you can't really polish a turd and O'Reilly is a stinker. Stewart has a certain flare that Colbert doesn't and let's not forget, Stewart made Colbert what he is today!

Stewart gave him a mainstream platform, he didn't make him though.

It's a bit more than just "gave" - Many supporting hosts from Daily Show have been guided by Jon considerably over the years and they've gone on to do pretty big things. I can't see them having the successes they did had it been someone else on another show doing it for them because of the following Daily Show has.

Scott Aukerman and comedy bang bang is the only interesting thing to hit the american talk show circuit in years. Don't think it has quite made it over here, but its Hilarious. A sort of dry brit humour mixed with american wackiness.

Shame to see Letterman go. He was good friends with Warren Zevon and even provided backing vocals on one of my favourite songs.

Not sure how Colbert will work this late show gig though. Will he break character, in which case will it cheapen The Colbert Report? :/

e: still drunk, so stream of consciousness posts commence!
