hi there

i have my htpc in my bedroom at the moment
it is too far away form our router to consider using wires

currently it is using a usb wireless g dongle
which has a pretty dire signal reciever on it

i am after a device that i can plug into my pc using an ethernet port and will recieve the wireless signal from my router downstairs

can you reccomend me some products?

you can use a wireless bridge but it's a bit overkil for your needs and you'll probably get better speeds using a Powerline system that converts a cabled ethernet connection to run out of a power socket, which your HTPC must have near it.

so i would need a wireless bridge

not keen on the powerline stuff

was just after something that looked like another router that recieves wireless signals and ran an ethernet into the pc

i know it may be overkill but i would like the option to run a few ethernet devices off it

such as my 360

why what is its advantage - how does it work exactly?

i know jack all about networking so you are going to have to put it into n00b terms

this is what i wanted to do

is a powerline solution better?

what kind of performance would it give?

close to that of wired?

What you looking for is a Wireless Access Point (here)

would those products work as a wireless reciever?

as in they take the wireless signal from the main router and then put it down an ethernet cable into the pc?

i'd just get a £30 pci wireless card for the htpc
i would do but i wanted the ability to use more than one ethernet device if possible

im still really stuck - if i get a wireless access point - wont it just work as another router or does it need to be set as a wireless reciever?

just read into the powerline option and its a no go - i have seperated electrical rings in my house so powerline would offer poor performance

i may be a bit thick here
but why do i need the long ethernet cable

if i plug the WAP into my pc upstairs [ethernet]
will it not just get the signal off the wireless router downstairs?

do all WAP's have a bridge/repeater function?

can anyone suggest something that might sort the problem out so i can stop asking dumb questions?

all help is greatly appreciated

Not all access points support this, most of the cheaper ones are designed to provide access layer connectivity rather than distribution layer infastructure. You'd need to read the specks of the individual product. If it is advertised as a wireless bridge then it will most probably support this function.

Any cheap router would do the trick, probs come in same if not < than any gaming adapter, and you would extend your wireless range/have ethernet ports in another room, just set it up to be in the same ip pool, fwding to the base(internet) router.

Done

Get out the power drill and make a cable to go through the walls :p buy a bit of trunking to make it look tidy going up the walls and hey presto

So do I and I got or get between 60 and 83% of the max rated connection speed of my old 85 and new 200 mbps homeplug AV units. Enough for internet access and tv inc HD streaming around a 4 bed house 7 garage.

So long as the rings go back to a single fusebox then there will be a commons connection and its very likley to be more reliable than wifi given you already know you get weak wifi.

With Powerline you can test if its going to be any good in a couple of minutes as there is zero configuration if you go with the defaults.
