No wired/wireless internet connectivity, but the local networks fine?

Hey guys,

A mate has had this problem since yesterday morning: on his wireless laptop he can't connect to the internet – the connection just times out? He's using IE and FF.

Ping works okay and the internet on his wired desktop works fine? On the laptop I've tried running it without any startup items and also in Safe Mode but the issue persists… We've also tired wiring up the laptop directly to the router (Netgear DG834) to no avail – he always gets local network connectivity between machines, but never the internet :(

We've tried rebooting the router, releasing his ip, renewing it etc – but its not having it. It seems so bizarre that it has just suddenly stopped working like this.

Tomorrow I was going to take round my wireless Netgear adaptor to try out? The one he's using atm is his Mesh laptops own.

Anyone spotted anything glaringly obvious that I've failed to address or try out – I spent about an hour on this 'seemingly' simple problem today :o

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

SW.

Can it ping an IP/name on the internet?

If he can access the network, it's almost certainly not the network adapter - especially if it's the same wired.

Yeah it can definitely ping: we tried all the usual: bbc, ebay, google etc and they were all good :)

Could it be possible that elements of the onboard network adaptor have simply died or started to deteriorate? Just a thought... I'm all out of ideas now.

So it can ping the site, but can't get to it via a browser?
What error do you get? Any proxy settings?

Easy(ish) way of making sure it isn't a Windows issue - stick in a Ubuntu LiveCD, and see if the browser works from there.

is zonealarm installed on the lappy by any chance?
It is, but I've loaded the laptop without any startup items and in Safe Mode with Networking - still nothing... With no software/services running at start up there shouldn't be a problem should there?

That's right - getting a response through cmd.exe isn't a problem, we just couldn't get anything through a browser (well, IE and FF).

He's not using a proxy, he's got a straight through connection from his router.

Downloading Ubuntu now ;)

Turn zone alarm down to medium and see what happens, there is a known issue with the latest windows update and zone alarm causing internet to get blocked.

Removing ZA from start up and running the machine in Safe Mode would remover ZA from the equasion wouldn't it? I'll get him to try that now tho.

I didn't say is he using a proxy, I said is his machine set to use one
No, both his machines are set to auto connection or whatever that setting is in the browser?

Cheers guys,

SW.

This is likely to be the latest microsoft update. Zone alarm was subsequently blocking all traffic. Set security to medium and it will work. Then go to the check point web site where you will find a link to the updated version of zone alarm free released yesterday to fix.

Thanks everyone - it was ZA as it turns out... My mate had an email from them this morning with instructions ;)

It arrived after I'd already provided him with the solution from here though!

Cheers,

SW.
