No wireless IP

One of the computers in the house hasn't been able to use the internet for a couple of days. It's wireless and had worked for ages, but has suddenly stopped.

It sees the network and connects, and the router admin panel shows it as a connected wireless device, but it cannot get an IP on the network. I've tried assigning manually (possibly incorrectly) and also using automatic (which is how it had worked for ages).

ipconfig /release or /renew do not work as the device is not in an appropriate state, or something. Presumably because there's no IP assigned.

Have run for spyware etc. and am just about to run winsockxpfix now. Any suggestions?

Some cards do this from time to time (belkin and d-link seem to a lot more than others).

Have you tryed to uninstall it, then reinstall ?
Also imho I always let windows control my wireless conection, not the card maker.

Yeah, it's a Belkin (connecting to a Netgear router). It's always yellow and lowly connected despite the fact that my laptop connects perfectly wherever I am in the house with it.

It's come back now, but seems a bit intermittent. Might try the re-install. Didn't realise Windows control had advantages over the card's own?

this happened to me the software that came along with my wireless card just would want to connect so i tried windows zero config and it worked better than the software that came bundled.

IMHO it does, remember the the cards software is 3rdparty, it basiclly just taps into the code (already there in XP/vista) and puts a new face on it :) with a few added code strings.
or in some instances replaces all (or some) of the code that was just fine to begin with.

If the card does not get a wireless IP does it eventually pick up a default from windows?

If not I suspect the card is goosed. Try deleting and restarting from scratch maybe even unistall the software and device comepltely from the PC before starting again in a different pci or usb socket as appropraite.
