I have a 5600x on order, and have bought myself a D15s to go on it.

would the S model be enough for overclocking this chip, or should I get an extra fan to bolt onto it (is there actually any difference between the D15 and D15s, or is it just an extra fan?)

this of course is if my CPU actually turns up... like many its been on order since the 6th with no updates as to when its actually coming

It's one of the best aircoolers out there, the cooling shouldn't be an issue, the more common issue, is can you fit it in your case
The difference between the D15 and D15S is that part of the heatsink on the D15s is cut down a little to give better ram clearance and more compatiblity for fitting in builds.
The D15 comes with 2 fans the S version with 1 fan.
If you know the height of your ram and if the standard d15 would fit, I would get that as 2 fans vs the cost of buying an extra fan later, and the noctua fans aren't cheap

Nh d15 the front fan can be moved upwards to make room for memory modules taller than 32mm (e.g. moving the fan 5mm up will increase the total height from 165 to 170mm and make room for 37mm tall modules)

The D15S was primary designed with an offset to clear the top PCI-E slot as well as the ram clearance mentioned above, it cools no lesser than the D15 and AFAIK due to the newer fans it came with.

There was a hint at launch that why would bring out a thicker fan for that middle section gap (like older 35mm fans)

Ok so should be fine with just the one fan then :D

I do have a spare 120mm rgb fan than I can probably fit if needed, but will run with the d15s out the box for now

What thermal compound is best rated these days? not built a pc since 4th gen intel, using mx4...

The D15S should come with NT-H1 when new, so if you are buying new then use that, it's very good stuff.

i did get a new one, so thats good it comes with decent compound!

I have a Tecware Forge case, which seems like a copy of the Meshify, so hopefully airflow should be pretty good (3 front, 1 rear, 2 top fans)

Case looks okay. Do you have any specifications for it's 200mm front fans? 200mm fans are notorius for being almost worthless, and not finding any specs for them leads me to believe they will be the weak link in having good case airflow. I did a quick look but didn't find any. If they are not at least 1.2mm H2O @ 1100rpm I would be putting higher pressure fans in. I would remove all unused PCIe back slot covers to increase rear vent area around GPU for better front to back airflow and fill front with good pressure rated intake fans. I would also block off all openings in fan mounting panel (panel between front grill and motherboard compartment) so air fans are pulling though front mesh grill and pushing/pushing into motherboard compartment has to flow on through and out back, not leak around fans and end up going in circles in front. I like how case looks, just not sure about it's front fans. If stock 200mm fans are nto good, you might need about 3x 140mm good pressure rated front intakes cycling with CPU and GPU cooler fans would give case fans are always flowing a little more air then cooler fans are using. Basically what write-up the link above says to do. ;)

hrm this one doesnt have 200mm fans, it has 3x120mm fans, "Orbis F1" same for the rear and top fans

looking at specs supposedly 1.15mm but not sure at what RPM
