Hi guys,

As above, what's the deal with removing this heatsink? I fitted one a few weeks back but I've got a chip I need test and I've got to remove it.

How does one remove the center fan in order to access the retaining screws? Without damaging in the supporting wires ideally. There must be a knack to it :D

Thanks.

those wires securing the fan can get stuck in the metal fins of the cooler.

you have to just tease them free as best you can.

I usually do the clips one at a time. Start with the GPU side and just pull away from the heatsink until the clip can unhook. Then try to do the same for the other side, which may be trickier due to headroom between the cooler and top of the case.

I made a tool for this. Just a small length of wood (long enough to hold easily) and screw a small cup hook (https://www.diy.com/departments/zinc-plated-medium-cup-hook-l-20mm-pack-of-6/241400_BQ.prd) into the end. You can then use this to prise the springs off the fan. The springs are very resilient and unless you are completely agricultural you will not deform them.
Genius. I'll try that at the weekend... I had some (auto) pry tools lined up to test.

I guess I could even use some coated hooks, hopefully reducing the risk of any potential damage. A mate also suggested wrapping some ptfe tape around a hooked pick. I could also try that. Thanks all!
