Is it possible to install this without the mounting tool as my box didn't have one inside.

Its only a star screwdriver basically.

If fitting to a AM2 mobo in the normal position it needs to pass through the hole in all the fins top reach screws at bottom.

For Intel 775 there is no real issue.

So i dont need it if im fitting it on a socket 775 cpu?

You would have issues if doing this.
It looks like the orientation on socket 775 can avoid above.
Screw doesn't look that hard to get at...
Just depends what screwdrivers you have I guess.
