hi,

just built my new system, and just want to check something regarding my noctua u12f hs/f...

when you first swith the system on, the fan spins for maybe a few tenths of a second then stops... it then continues as normal after maybe 3 seconds...

also, in the bios, in the health section, it shows the speeds of the pwer and sys fan (basically the two case fans) but the cpu fan registers as 0...

are these two issues perfectly normal (obviously if possible i would like it to post cpu fan speed...)

my motherboard is a gigabyte ds3p btw... and yes i have the fans plugged into the correct respective mobo slots...

Yeah, software-based monitoring tools like speedfan, everest etc. Fair enough, have a check when you have windows installed. The BIOS must be giving out false readings.

right...

in speedfan... i get:

Fan 1: 0 RPM
Fan 2: 1350000 RPM
Fan 3: 1350000 RPM

and as far as i can tell, i can control Fan 2 by adjusting the "Speed02" setting below but the other one i can't budge ("Speed03" doesnt affect anything...)

also at the right it says this:

Temp1: 41C
Temp2: 19C
Temp3: -2C
HD0: 33C
HD1: 31C
Core0: 28C
Core1: 28C

now then i'm assuming the cores are my "dual" core cpu... the hd0 is my raptor and the hd1 is my caviar... what exactly are temp 1,2 & 3?

could do with a bit of help on this people? does it all look ok and why is the cpu fan not playing ball?

I don't use Speedfan myself but I assure its regarding the CPU and not the cores. There are 3 temperatures that are given, CPU, and the two cores. One could be the ambience I'm only guessing though as I say I don't use Speedfan

I didn't think the CPU fan speed would register as it doesn't have the fourth PWM pin?

I thought the PWM pin was to control the speed of the fan using pulse width modulation rather then the normal voltage drop. the 3rd pin should be the fan speed monitoring pin. make sure it's plugged in properly on the mobo and not being pushed up and out when you plug it into the mobo connector.

when CPU temp is below a certain level it will turn off the fan as it isnt needed, it done the same on my DS3 but once i started doing stuff the fan started up, hasnt really bothered me much aslong as the temps are low

Yeah but the case is open next to me and i assure you the big-ass 120mm cpu fan is spinning ;)

i've checked the cable and its plugged in fine and dandy (in fact that was the first thing i checked...)

any other ideas?

I have the same board and a Noctua NH-U12F cooler. The fan speed will not register until the fan is spinning at > 750rpm. For me, if the cooling settings are left on legacy or auto the fan wont reach 750 rpm until the cores hit 47 degrees, which i only hit with overclocking.

You can also go into your bios - pc health - smart fan control and disable it. The fan will then run at full speed 1200 rpm. Speedfan doesnt give an accurate reading but everest will if you want to see the speed on your screen.

I've just recently upgraded my cooler in my Opteron system to the Scythe Infinity and the supplied fan doesn't register its RPM in my bios where my ACPro used to. I think it has something to do with the cables in the fan plug, it needs a certain one to report the RPM. I wouldn't worry too much unless you wantthe system to control the fan speed and with the Noctua i wouldn't think noise would be a problem, so just run it max! :D
