My yearly nod32 license has expired but I don't know whether to renew. I really like nod32, it just gets on with everything by itself, takes up very little resources and is generally just a nice simple package. However I'm a student and as such don't really want to fork out the 20 odd quid to renew.

How do the free alternatives compare? I want something that is:
1. free
2. not a resource hog
3. doesn't require much user interaction, i.e. does everything (scan/block/update etc) in the background

Any advice would be much appreciated

Something for free isn't going to be better. Nod is one of the 2 best av out there (the other being Kaspersky). I'd only get one of those.

Either renew NOD32 or get Kaspersky. I think there is an offer to get 50% off the price of Kaspersky at the moment. Normally I'd say NOD32 only but seeing as you can get Kaspersky dirt cheap at the moment its a no brainer. The offer lasts until the 27th December. If you want just the AV it is £12 at the moment.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10531000&postcount=14 - This post shows you how to get another 30% off! So I was wrong, not 20 or 25% but 30%.

That code expired a few days ago :(:(
I'm really annoyed because I was about to buy 2 X 2 year licences too... Oh well, you still get 50% off and it is only £12 at the moment.

get antivir and save your self money. Stopping viruses is much more to do with conmen sense than AV. There really is no need to pay for AV.

It's not the stopping of viruses, it's how it deals with protection. Buying an AV product on the strength of how well it detects viruses is rather silly saying as the charts change every few hours, and no 2 charts are the same.

It's all about how efficiently a product tries to detect them.

The free products are obviously excellent value for money, but they don't really compete with NOD32 or Kaspersky (other than that AOL one which they stopped offering :().

If you don't want to pay for something, I'd suggest Avast. I'm a cheap ass student as well and it's always done it's job for me. tbh I've never paid for antivirus software and I've never had a virus so the free ones (used AVG before Avast) can't be all that bad :D

Am I careful or just me but I have had NOD32 and it has never detected a virus within the 2 years it has been installed. Take it this is a good thing, but I have never had a prompt saying virus detected or a when i have run a scan. I am quite a safe browser just would expect it to report at least one virus, which makes me wonder about the effectiveness of NOD32?

AVG free edition does it for me, never had a virus to date, it self updates everyday and runs regular checks on the PC...what more can I ask, no point paying as far as I am concerned.

What he said.
I use Avast & have for around 18 months, common sense wins over Any AV.

But what about those of us who've got a machine or two running Windows 2003 Server... Antivir doesn't support it ;)

Looks like a NOD subscription will be coming my way when I get paid. £20 a year for peace of mind is nothing.

Saying that... my installation of NOD expired a few days ago and it still seems to work as it should

I've always used free AV. In a decade of being connected to the internet I have only got 3 viruses. All 3 where immediately detected and deleted. I will occasionally do scans from trials or online ones. To check they haven't missed anything. But they never do.

Avast, avg. There's a hole bunch of them.

Nope your sensible, if you use the net wisely you should never get viruses.
