Maybe im going mad, but 18 months ago i built a PC rig, was a quiet whipser under the desk, now it sounds like a small petrol engine... Ive cleaned all the fans, moved the wires, made sure nothing is loose, still noisey!..

Could it be the CPU fan or the PSU fan making a racket? without swapping them out for new ones, how do you test to see what is making the most noise?

What would you recommend for case fans, as in quiet ones... price not an issue.

ColiN

PS - will get the case make [ its an old silver aluim OC's one] and other bits as soon as i can.

Put your ear near the parts, listen to the PC up close and you should be able to isolate where the most noise is coming from.

You haven't got a ASUS A8N model mobo have you? If you then its more than like the nForce chipset fan. They are faulty, and the replacement you get for free from Asus is faulty also, get a Zalman NB cooler or sumin instead... Thats if you have one of those mobos of course :)

Hard this happen with a northbridge fan on my mobo, took it off, cleaned it, applied some arctic silver instead, and it hasnt made noise in a while now, and of course the temps are better, though its not as secure as before, i think the compound used was more adhesive then the AS5, but its on there firmly enough to say on.

As said though, just use your ears, take the side off and move your head around, its not that hard to narrow it down.

Although if he has a Asus A8N board, I can pretty much guarantee its that fan that is faulty!

Its rubbish that the one that Asus give you as a replacement, which is suppose to be much better made, does exactly the same thinh after a while. Could never have that prob with a HS, and I never did after :)

I have about 4 or 5 northbridge fans spare from other motherboards that got chucked for one reason or another, plus i have an unused zalman to, so i don't tend to worry... :D

Cant remember the make of the board, was a lanparty something... got it from OC's too lol.. good board, just htis noise is making it hard to download and sleep int he same room now.

Will have to get my ear to the PC as said, and see if i can find the source.

o well...

You should open up your own store, NBUK.co.uk :)

Most boards now days don't use fans do they, seem to lob heatsinks on them instead, so I reckon colin does have a prob with his NB. Get one of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SY-007-ZA&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat= if t31os doesn't get round to be a kind hearted person and sending you a freebie!

Thats the Zalman i have sat in my box of bits, just never got round to fitting it because the current one stays quiet (touch wood).

Ive actually got one of those bad boards sitting on my old board with my 4400+

Was gonna put it on my P5N-E, but I'd prob get either one of the newer Zalmans, or get a noctua.

Trying to get my dad to check the make of the board, but it took 15 mins to tell him how to turn it on, so im not hopeful. I will have to wait until Friday when i get back home.

Is it easy to see what type of fan i have ect on a MB. Like i said, i only remeber it as a lanparty m/b. Its holding a AMD 4400 atm i think, if that helps. was bought january 2006.

Will get more correct info and let you very helpful guys know.

Cheers for the adivce so far.

Next MB, get it without a fan lol..

Just look around the board, and if you see a small chipset fan spinning away that will be the fan that I think is in question. It might not even be the chip I am talking bout, because you have a Lanparty, and the faulty boards I am referring too are Asus boards. But who know, could still be the same problem!

If it is faulty, then I would get a replacement heatsink, as it will moe than like completely conk out in the end, and then the chip might burn out and thats not a good day for anyone.

Those Zalmans are on £5, and they are noisless so they are worth any penny.

But obviously make sure its that first, so as t31os mentioned above, stick ya head in the box and listen for the noise... its in there somehwere!

Good luck!

I wouldn't use one of those for the NB on the P5N-E. Use it for the SB then get a noctua for the NB. That particular Zalman one probably wouldn't be any better for temps then the stock one or maybe even worse. It's tiny ;)

Yeah Im not gonna use it, the only reason I thought about it, was cos its smaller it gives me more room around it to mount a 80mm (max) fan to point at it.

But I can't be bothered at the moment, so I am leaving as is. I would get a noctua (like I know you have just bought Darg) to go on there if I want a third party jobbie.

You managed to fit that noctua with the AC7 right? Or did you replace the AC7 aswell?

What I generally do to find where a noise is coming from is to stop fans one by one and listen for a big difference in noise.

But like has been said many times before NB fans are usually the culprit :)

I fit it on with the Noctua H12 CPU heatsink which takes up a good chunk of sideways room. The noctua NB heatsink is much thinner then the stock so as long as height isn't a bother then it'll fit fine.

Oh ok, so you got a Noctua NB and CPU cooler now. How tight is the fit then? Between the two noctuas?

They're touching but it's okay as the fins pretty much match up height wise so air flows straight through the two of them quite nicely :)

I don't have them set up at the moment due to my board dying but that's how they were working.. for 5 minutes ;)

ok - got home. did the ear test - found it was a small fan at the top of the computer case - guess i need a new one.

I do have a fan on the CPU too, seems to be a bit noisey as well..

The case i have is a cooler master ATCS system, nice looking box.

What fans are good for this and what would you guys put on a ath 4400+x2 core CPU to keep it cool and quiet!

TYIA
