Thinking of selling of 8800GTS 512 and getting a 4870, as the PC is in the living room I’m a bit concerned about the noise level, which is the quietest 4870?

I game at 1080p so think the upgrade will be worth it…

Cheers

I haven't tried a stock 8800 GTS 512 to compare to, but I have used a stock 4870 and while some people may argue otherwise, I'm fussy about noise and it was way too loud when gaming.

If you're bothered about noise I'd highly recommend picking up a Accelero S1 rev2 to go with it. I now have it with an Accelero + 120mm 500RPM fan and it's perfect. Temps are 25c lower than stock too.

It's VERY load when it spins up but it is as quiet the 8800 GTX at anything below 30-35% fan speed. Doesn't really spin up in my case, but if you have a small case and high ambient temps, it may start spinning up so that you can notice it.

I don't find it a problem. Although I do have it at the side of my desk and usually have headphones on when gaming. If you do find it too noisy when you get one, just invest in an after-market cooler there will be some hitting the etailers soon!

Its noisier than the 8800gts 512 that i had idle, although you can make it silent by using a profile, unofrtunately it means switching back and forth when you put a game on.

I'm very fussy about noise and I thought the 4870 was pretty good. Quieter than the 9800 GTX but a little louder than the 512 GTS.
