Noise limitation..

Anyone ordered one of the Thermalright Shaman from OCUK lately, it's showing out of stock, they quick to get stuff turned around usually?

And will the PSU just have standard 120mm and 80mm fans? If I can find ones with equal airflow / throughput would that be alright?

I had to get my Shaman elsewhere and a fortnight later OcUK got them back in stock so I wasted £8. They've been out of stock a little while now though.

As regards PSU fans I've seen they are usually around the 2000rpm figure for 120mm versions at this sort of wattage.

Does your PSU have both sized fans then? Seems a bit overkill.

If you can find a decent review for your particular model you may find that someone has listed the fan part numbers and you can work it from there.

It's safe enough to drop the speed a touch, maybe 20-30% with normally no ill effects.

You might be better served by getting a quiet PSU though.
 
I'll have to find a review for the PSU, good tip.

I stripped everything down last night and blew it out, stripped the PSU and blew it out, and used contact cleaner sprayed into all the fans, maybe not the greatest long-lasting solution but they're all working, and definitely quieter!

Though I think i'll definately find a GPU cooler, whether the Shaman or another, just do kinda think i'm paying £56 (that's the cheapest I've found somewhere) to cool a card worth about £20! :(
 
Yeah to be quite honest I'd ditch the card and grab something newer. A second hand 5770 would be a significant upgrade and there are custom cooled versions available

You might be able to pick one up for around the cost of the Shaman. It might not be as quiet as a Shaman but it'd certainly be quieter than a stock 8800gtx, use 50 Watts less and give you DirectX11.

5770 is around 25-30% faster according to some benchies I just looked at.

Food for thought.

When buying my Shaman my graphics card was less than a fortnight old so I'm guaranteed to get at least a good years use out of the cooler, assuming of course that the next series is not compatible.
 
That's not a bad idea TBH, as the cards been misbehaving lately. It died a few months ago and I did the oven trick which worked fine, i'd guess that's by no means a permanent fix..

Are the later cards like the one mentioned quite reliable?
 
More reliable than cards you have to put in the oven every couple of months? Yes.

I would have recommended this earlier but I didn't check how out of date and relatively low performance the 8800GTX was compared with even the mid range cards from the last AM/ATI card generation.
 
Hiper 580W PSUs are pretty noisy as things go I'm afraid, so you might be short of luck in getting your system nice and silent if you keep that. There's far worse PSUs out there, but also far better. The 8800GTX is getting on a bit and does put out a bit of heat. However, that doesn't mean you can't retrofit it to be quiet. I can actually get away with my old X1900XT being fanless, just about, on an HR-03. From what I can gather the 8800GTX uses maybe 20-30% more power, so you'd need a fan, but a relatively low speed 92mm [say, 1500rpm] should suffice I'd think.

FWIW, my Hiper 580W was bought in June 2006, and is still working to this day, I still see the guy I sold it to :P By contrast, the 750W CWT Toughpower that replaced it (which I also sold for sake of my hearing) has apparently bit the dust.

Yeah I should have thought that when I said! Although in the cards defence I think it was actually a pre-production card so it's not done all that bad since 2006.

And yeah it's very long in the tooth nowadays, I remember looking about a year ago and nothing was properly abusing it under £130+ so I didn't bother upgrading. Although I suppose nowadays the gaps widening.

I'll have a look at what's about nowadays. Might be worth picking up a new card and putting the money I sell the 8800GTX for towards the new one. Just don't want to sling loads of money at it as I rarely game on here now, mainly the PS3 these days.

I saw the HR-03GT about I think it was, was considering that as it was a bit cheaper, think i'll look at cards now though.

You've got a year up on in the PSU stakes but yeah mines been as good as gold. From the brief reading I did I think part of the problem was the fans being the wrong way round on some units from manufacture, and they don't tend to like a build up on dust / being clogged up.
 
Anyway as far as progress goes I've ordered a fan controller and 2 fans, one 120mm, and one 92mm. The intention will be to have a look at the PSU fans throughput compared to the new ones, if they're shifting about the same amount of air and are noticeably quieter I'll change them, just a bit of a chore if it's not much different.
 
Yep I suppose to achieve that throughput it's got to be fast / noisy. I'll have an play to keep myself happy though I think.
 
Only the throughput needed to cool an inefficient unit. The 530W unit in my server (NX-5000 R3) is a 120mm fan that only spins at 350rpm until around the 200W mark. My 580W hiper was only loaded at 100-120W most of the time, and its 120mm fan was well over 1000rpm and the 80mm fan was at least 1500rpm+, lots of noise.

Board: DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D (the overlockers dreamof those days)
Processor: AMD X2 Skt 939
RAM: DDR2 Crucial 2gb
Powersupply: Hiper TypeR 580W

Usual old IDE PATA drives, CD/DVD Writer.

That Hiper PSU was bought new, to replace the old Antec that was showing signs of wear. The Hiper lasted a year, the caps started screaming one day so i switched the whole lot off, pulled the plug. I bought an OCZ 700W PSU, plugged it in, the motherboard was dead...nothing, not even 4 red lights of death. I got an old Skt 939 Asus board from the neighbour which is working, dropped my skt939 into it...nothing. The powersupply took out the board (and those old DFI's was dang good boards) and the dual core processor :(

Get rid of that hiper as soon as ya can...and the second you even hear a hint of a high pitched whine coming from it, pull the plug from the socket and dont even risk turning it back on until ya get another PSU.

As for your system as is. Before mine died 2 months ago the trick i done was rip the system apart and then remove the heatsink from the GeForce 8800GTX (i still have my old 8800, its the only part still working...im using a 460 GTX now though) clean off the GPU, the stock heatsink and layer it with ArcticSilver. The temperature drop was significant. In the days of the 8800GTX even the top end makers like Gainward still used relativley naff white generic goop for their thermal paste. The stock fans on the 8800GTX series are noisey, but sticking a fresh layer of AS thermal paste drops the temps on the GPU and since the temps drop the fan wont go up to 70 to 80% rpm which is when the usual wind turbine noise from those old stock coolers start.

To be honest though i would get a Geforce 460GTX from here...its not as expensive as ya might think (cause its mid range) has DX11 and compared to the 8800GTX you will notice a big increase in framerates.
 
While they were very good for other things, I'm not convinced the DFIs, with all their extra power connectors, were very good for dealing with surges. Back in 2005 I had a scabby Qtec 450W PSU, which I was fully aware of the badness of even when I bought it, was just too lazy to replace it, and when it inevitably went up in smoke, it took out several components, but both the motherboard and the CPU survived (MSI MS-6775 KT600, SKTA XP3000+), I just lost one of the three sticks of RAM, one of the hard disks, just the data on another, and the floppy drive. Seemingly anything 5V got zapped, but 12V-operated stuff like the CPU and graphics card survived. My hypothesis was that the 5V and 12V rails were somehow joined, so 12V ran down both rails.
