Noise on Start-up

Bought a new graphics card (5850) and installed just before my HD finally began to die (had been making a clicking noise which got gradually worse over a few days prior).

Anyway I noticed that when powering on the machine, there is a big whoosh of power to the fans and then the machine settles down and runs as normal. It certainly wasn't like this before I installed the 5850.

Is this normal??

Yeah, it's normal. Almost every graphics card I've owned has done this.

as above, this is totally normal.

Just the graphics fan spinning up and then the speed slowing down to normal operating speed

You should hear the 4870x2 with stock cooler.

100% fan on boot up then it settles down. Damn near blew my face off the first time I installed it!

Is that what it is? I never thought that tiny little fan on my 9800GTX could produce that much noise! I thought it was my CPU and all my other fans at once, I completely disregarded the GPU cooler! Do you think it is worth looking into aftermarket GPU coolers? seems very fiddly!
