I have recently moved house and my new house has thick carpets. When i am upstairs i can hear the pc downstairs humming through the whole house. In my last house it was not this bad, i think it is the carpet that is making the sound worse.

Has anyone had similar problems with having their desktop on a thick carpet and is there anything anyone can suggest to prevent the problem. I was thinking of putting the pc on some wood but that would not look to great.

If anything carpet will reduce the sound - that's not the problem. More likely your new house is just noisier than your old house. If it's a much newer build and your old house was old and solid, it's not surprising - they dont make things like they used to! You might just have to address the noise of the PC itself with quiet fans etc.

Is the pc up against a wall or something this time to allow for more vibration to travel? Other than that I would suggest your new house has thinner walls/flooring to your old one. How noisy is your pc though for it to be that loud? Maybe invest in some sound dampening stuff for the pc (quieter fans, rubber mounts for the hdds and psu or just some sound dampening material to cover some of the internal panels).

Yea, thick carpet would reduce the sound... Unless it's thick, but very squashy, so the case has just squashed the capet down, and it practically touching the floor. Something like a sheet of thick neoprene under the case should help.

Maybe a rubber mat type thing will help. We have one under the sky+ box as it sits in a wooden cabinet and there is noticably less vibration noise than without the rubber mat.

Silicone rubber case feet can make a surprising difference to vibration transfer. I installed some on an old case and the difference was palpable. Still for a pc to transfer that much vibration there must be something seriously running very fast or out of balance.

Try rubber or something similar underneath by all means, but since it ought to be pretty well isolated from the structure by the carpet anyway, I wonder if he's just hearing it directly through the ceiling?

Lol mine does the same, got around it by stuffing a pair of socks directly under the middle of the bottom of the case, dunno why it works it just did, I am now in a Buzz free house.
Not a very technical solution but it worked for me. Suppose it depends how high the feet on your case are though I suppose.

Dave.

If it was on a solid floor and is now on a suspended timber floor, it is vibration through the structure. The same if it used to be near to a solid wall and is now near a stud partition wall.

To check air transmission, cover the PC in a thick duvet and see if that makes a difference. Not for too long, it may get warm. If it is air transmission, it is harder to resolve as you would need an additional barrier to contain the noise.

To reduce structural vibration, use some thick lightweight foam, approx 2" (50mm) under the box. I did this under my woofer upstairs to avoid compaints from TV watchers below.

Put some foam under the PC, should help. I had to do this in my old house. It annoyed me greatly
