Hi,
I recently upgraded my GPU and CPU + cooling fans. I use the system primarily for MSFS in VR.
I've got a weird issue that when I've been in VR for a short time and the system is stressed there is a noise coming from the PC that sounds like a wire is touching the top mounted fans. If I come out of VR the noise disappears and likewise, if I remove the side panel of the PC it also doesn't happen. I can't tell if the noise is electrical or physical.
I have a recording of it on my phone but not sure how to upload it here.
Just looking for some suggestions on how to diagnose please.

Steve

I'd suggest you want to strip away as much as possible and then re test by adding stuff back in. For example, if it is something to do with the fans, disconnect them and then retest.

It's also possible it's coil whine from the GPU or something similar, which you can't really do anything about.

I watched a YT movie to see what coil whine is - this noise is way louder than that. Actually just uploaded it to youtube:

Just listened to your video, as you said in 1st post, it does sound like a cable is just barely touching a fan randomly. Is your machine SSD/NVMW only?

I have a SSUP Mesh and did get this previously with my AIO fans/radiator grazing some of the internal cabling. I had to just try and re-do the cable ties and placement a little which resolved my similar noises.

How is the panel attached on the case? Is the fitting tight, is there any give? Only other thought i've had now is whether it's some sort of vibration coming from the fans and is rattling the side panel somehow.

Yeah it's not a vibration - checked that also. I really think it's the fans but no idea what could cause it. I had the fans fitted as wasn't sure how to do it from a cables perspective but I'll have to get it checked out again

this almost sounds like glass cracking. you said when you take the side panel off the sound goes away. could you check gpu temps as the gpu could be pushing enough heat out towards the side panel so that when tightened it is causing the side panel to rub against the thumb screws as it expands. i say this as my previous side panel did this and was driving me nuts. ever so slightly i loosened the side panel screw and that fixed it without any vibration issues after :)

Remember years ago upgrading my GPU and when I turned the PC on found the noise was so loud ... but I assumed that that was just the cost of the new generation of GPUs so put up with it. A few months later I was upgrading something else and was running the PC with the case open. I happened to slightly move the cables from the mboard to the case switches ... and suddenly the noise stopped ... one of them had been resting against the intake case fan!
