As soon as I start a game like eq2 or wow my brand new BFG 7950 graphics card fan make a lot of noise. Sometimes it will then throttle back and be much quieter. It is unacceptably loud and aslo I get game crashes in eq2 (okay this is under vista). I did get the latest bios and drivers from nvidia.

Question what do i do. Send the card back due to noise? But is it just noisy or is it likely faulty, cause it is crashing eq2?

cheers

Not sure why its crashing more than likely the drivers. The card may not be making proper contact with the heatsink which could be why its so noisy as the fan is automatically speeding up to try and cope with the heat output. The other option is by a new heatsink for it like the Zalman VF900 which will give you better temperatures and be much more quiet :)

thanks for the replies

BFG Geforce 7950 GT OC 512 MB

temps... not sure how to tell that for the graphics card, I am running Vista so lots of the software that come with the card are not installed. My Mboard and cpu temps are less than 40, even after prolonged gaming and I check this by quickly rebooting and going into the bios.

Hmmmm it is noisy now and I am not even in a game. The fan just came on.

My BFG 7800GT has left me permenantly deaf in one ear.

Its alright though, i swapped the base unit to the other side of me two weeks ago and that ear is nearly done too.

is bfg a good make even? Should i have gone for asus or .....

I just assumed the overclockers sold good brand name.

They've got a good rep tbh, better than most, but very noisy coolers.

You've got a good card, dont worry, BFG know how to make GFX cards, just know when you buy em you'll have to replace the cooler if you want your ears to suvive.

Am looking at that Zalman for mine as well, but i also need cooling, that's why am looking at it.

The acellero X1 from Arctic cooling is much cheaper though, its doesn't reduce the temp much, but its very quiet.

Not sure if it takes yours though.

They are pretty noisy. I altered the fan thresholds on mine so now it runs at 100% fan duty, which is VERY intrusive - before it was set on 25%. 25% is great for normal speeds, rubbish for overclocked (got it to 591/820 fully stable at 100%).

card temps I cannot make sense of yet. PC wizard under vista shows the fan speed at 27% and the "GPU diode" at 702 degrees C, yes that is seven hundred and two. I know that is nonsense. But that it what I am seeing on the screen.
But when I start a game then the fan kicks in and the fan speed goes up to 58% and it is unacceptably noisy to me. At 27% fan speed the noise level is very acceptable.

Hmmmm looks like I need another monitoring tool. But is there a better one in Vista atm. ponder...

go into the nvidia control panel the temps of the gfx card are in there

thanks Massive but under vista I don't think u can load those utilites ... maybe I am wrong .. but I just have the drivers atm

Anyways I have decide that the fan is just too noisy for me. PC wizard says it is running at 58%, at 58% it is what i would consider is too noisy (personal opinion I know) what will it be like if I overclock it. ekkk So i am changing this card for a

XFX 512Mb GeForce 7950GT XT 570M PCI-Express VGA Card

which has NO fan and so can make no noise. HURREY problem solved.

thanks for taking the time to reply and help me out folks. Also I am quite impressed with overclockers.co.uk.... will be back to buy from them again.

Your going to change the card?

Bit drastic!

What do you do when your dog poo's on the rug, skin it alive and wear its hide as a nice coat?

I'd just get a new fan for it, with postage there and back, and hassle with vendor, it will probably be worth it.
