Hi,

Have a used quad core which is noisy, sounds like a fan, but which one please, and what could I do about it? Have removed dust that I can see and am considering removing fans to completely free them of dust.

Is there anything else that could cause a buzz on a computer?

Thanks.

Will need a little more info.

CPU. (Make and model)
CPU Cooler (Stock or 3rd party)
GPU (Make and model)
Motherboard.
PSU (Make and model)
Case (Make and model)
HDD's (Make and model)
DVD/CD Drive (Make and model)
Number of Fans.

Could be the case vibrating.

Could be Cap wine from the GPU.

Could be a HDD vibrating.

Could be a DVD/CD Drive vibrating.

CPU = Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33Ghz, 2336 Mhz, 4Core

Computer = Dell Studio 540 mini tower /X86-based PC

OS = Vista 32 bit Home Premium.

More when I get more. No wifi at present, should be here tomorrow.

Thanks.

Got these stats from SpeedFan - but when I looked inside the case all 3 fans were spinning. Any clues please?

Thanks

Haven't used SpeedFan in ages, so not sure, but possibly the 0 RPM fan doesn't have a speed sensor wire? If it has two wires only then that'd explain why.

You must be right, thanks - all the fans are spinning.

What about that 58C temperature reading though please?

What fans are they? Stock fans can be quite loud, same with stock cooler.

Thanks. Will have a look - the heat sink was muffled up in dust, had to poke a bit of thin pipe on the end of a vacuum through the fan blades to suck it all out.

Don't fancy (yet) taking the whole heat sink apart for a further clean, because that will mean re-sticking the processor with thermal cement?

Cleaned all the blades the same way. That cpu would have cooked otherwise :-|

Buy Arctic MX-2.. you can find them for as little as £3... one of the best thermal junks you can get.

And you should probably reinstall your heatsink (clean it etc) and apply with the new thermal paste as it will most likely fix your old problems and reduce the temps a fair bit.. if it doesn't then just get a Hyper212 cooler (£20ish) for the cpu

Thanks,

Will that definitely fit this system please?

What?

Thermal paste will "fit" everything, it's just some grey goo that sits in between CPU and heat sink, better ones simply transfer more of your CPUs heat to the cooler more efficiently (meaning lesser temps). If you've never opened a PC before if say google some tutorials and take care... It's really easy to do what you want but of you have doubts ask a friend.

Oh right... You're asking about the cooler. Lol sorry ok you'll have to open the side and measure the distance between the CPU and the side panel before I advise you

No worries, used that stuff before but i do find it a bit of a nightmare - scraping all the old glue off then spreading the new cement on & trying to get it even :-o

Yes, I'd have a good old gander at the Tube before I attempt replacing the heat sink ;)

Thanks.

cpu seems to run quite hot but i ran a Dell system check up and got the green ok - also downloaded some other diagnostic software from cnet, everything seems to be all right so far, thanks :) The buzz is greatly reduced since i vacuumed all the dust off the fan blades and out of the sink fins, just sounds like a reguar electronics hum now
