Hi all,

I've got an 8800GT who's fan is making a lot of noise, video here:

Linky

I've cleaned it all, all the fins of the cooler are straight and the change in noise is just me playing with the fan controller.

Easy to replace? if so, any cheapy suggestions? Don't fancy spending a fortune on an old card.

or is it fixable?

If it's a sleeve bearing you could oil it. Under the hub there should be a label, remove this and the plastic piece underneath. Then oil.

I have replaced a number of GPU fans. What you do is first find a case fan of the right size to fit. Unscrew the existing fan and locate the screw holes on to a piece of thin card. Next take a piece of plastic (I use DVD boxes for this) and cut out a polygon with the location of the screw holes you measured earlier in each corner with a small gap to the edge. I'd recommend using a pointy (bullet?) chisel to punch out the holes or a drill used very carefully if you can clamp the plastic.

Referring back to the case fan you chose, carefully clip out the motor and blade assembly from the middle and remove the sticker. Glue this assembly onto the piece of plastic you cut out (you can use superglue for this, a hot glue gun may also work). The superglue seriously sticks fast and I've never had one fail, even after about 5 years now. Finally you can screw the completed part back into the heatsink.

Quite often this is the only way to replace a fan on an old card.

Thanks for the advice, looks like i've a weekend project to sort :)

Must say, i've kind of enjoyed tinkering about in the case these last 2 days, cleaning it, fitting a new H60 cooler and tidying it up. normally just build it, leave it, build a new one.
