Had a ps3 since march and has been fine and now after being on for about 15-20 mins even just watching a dvd on it the fans seem to spin up really loud is there a known prob about this? am I best going back to store i bought it from or contacting sony direct?

Cheers

Possibly dusty? Give the grills a once over with a cloth and clean inside if you can - might be a build up of dust causing it.

If you turn the PS3 off at the switch at the back then hold down the eject button and turn the PS3 back on it'll do a fan test.

Give it a go, might clean it out a bit.

My PS3 disk drive is buggered - its sounds like it crunching my disks lol

Should really get around to getting it replaced but it can wait til after xmas

quick update, rang sony was politely told to go away, in otherwords they didnt want to know :( now outta warranty but they said noisy fan didnt meet a repair claim

Try again, tell them it's locking up in games.

Ignore the warranty, be forceful, if they try to fob you off make sure you tell them that when you first rang to report a fault it was in warranty.

Don't take no for an answer.

I had a horrendously noisy 40gb ps3 when I first got it, phoned Sony and they said it was because I kept it on a shelf and not on carpet

Sony refused to believe that it was loud, I told them that it was drowning out my 360 easily and they just said "well it is a powerful console"

So took it back to the place I bought it from and told them it wouldn't play games and got it swapped straight away,

A lot of this comes down to luck of who you get on the other end of the phone; a few people there seem to have a chip on their shoulder and want to be difficult but most give you a replacement console if you so much as hint at it.

This is true with most customer service lines, took me over an hour to get my IP profile reset on O2 broadband when I was synching at 8Mb but the speed was capped at 2Mb. The woman at the other end insisted I was wrong because they did a speed test on my line.

Don't give up after speaking to a single person, the majority of customer service requests are stateless, if you call back they don't know who you are (also annoyingly if the call drops).
