Hi , finally updated my rig to a socket 1150 Z97 , i7 4790.
Was still using my old HD 5850 , so a friend lent me a Gigabyte R9 270 OC, plays Far Cry 4 at ultra settings 1680x1050 no problem.
He has offered it to me for £50 which sounds a bargain but the fans are extremely loud , looked into replacement fans or oiling the original fans but not sure how difficult it is to remove the shroud.
Setting the fan speed to 25% in afterburner is fine just a slight hum , but 35% and up it sounds like a hoover and that's with it installed in a Fractal Design R5 which is soundproofed .
If its going to be a hassle to fix then what can I get for £100 that's equal or better than an R9 270 , wouldn't mind going back to Nvidia .

The fan sounds just like a cheap noisy case fan , the fan does not seem to be catching on anything . my old 5850 was much quieter at full load.
Manually set the fan to stay at its lowest speed 25% in afterburner then ran an hour of war thunder , max temp was 70c at 99% max gpu usage.
Thought it would have been considerably hotter than that as I was getting just under 70c when running a user defined setup in afterburner.
I'm going to keep it at the lowest fan speed and see how it goes , will see how the temps hold up when the weather gets warmer.
Had a quick search and it seems as long as its below 85c then it should be fine (ish).

I have a XFX R9 270 in my htpc rig and its really quiet. the only time i get to hear the fans spin up is when i have been gaming for a while
