How does the Nokia 6310i perform against modern phones? I need a phone for when I'm travelling. Something that is solid, has impeccible battery life and strong signal. I'm considering a 6310i. I want to be able to stick pretty much any local sim into it and make calls and send/receive texts. Internet access isnt necessary.

I had one years ago and I often think about it and my eyes glaze over with delight. I also get somewhat of an erection.

However, am I just being nostalgic and bigging it up to be better than it is? Do modern phones get better signal? Are there any modern features which the 6310i doesn't possess that I'm likely to miss? I have an iPhone 3GS (hock...spit) which I use for all the smartphone jazz.

It has been about 6 or 7 years since I last had mine. If I bought one of those refurbished ones for £40, how long can I expect battery life to be? Will it outdo modern phones on signal strength?

Most people remember these because as you say, they were built like a tank and lasted as long too. The signal factor isn't really an issue - nearly all phones receive the same amount of signal bar oddities like the samsung F480 (sup drop call rate of 4x higher than average) and even then it's usually down to niggles in the software. Before anyone even THINKS of cutting in with that overblown iphone 4 issue may i remind you that each network tests every phone to make sure the correct level of signal is established before released to the public, irrespective of the tests done by the manufacturers.

Good bits:
Lasts forever under good care,
pretty simple to use
2G triband - covers most worldwide networks.

Bad bits:
The reason it lasts forever is it's only 2G-triband. If you need quad this might be an issue - check countries you're going to. Some countries have roaming on 3G only too iirc (SEA area)
It's a bit long in the tooth - any model still kicking about is going to be 6+ years old and it's hard to say how long the phone would keep going.

I don't think you will make a better choice as a travelling phone

Bullet proof, simple, and battery life that modern 'smart phones' can only dream of. But as a previous owner you already know this :D

I only this year reluctantly gave up my 6310i for a Desire. You only have to look on ebay and they still fetch reasonable money. NOS one get over £100.

A modern classic.

N73? Awesome phone, reasonable camera as well for snaps shots if you are travelling. Decent battery life as wel when I had mine, but if I were travelling I'd have a 2nd battery for whatever phone I took anyway. Good size as well, screen is simply ace and I ran tom tom on mine, navigated through UK, France, Belgium, netherlands and Germany.

Similar to the 6310i, they still attract a premium but are worth it.

The 6310i was awesome.

Your battery will last weeks when travelling. It will get a signal wherever there is one. It will... just work.
