Hey,

i have just purchased an asus laptop off a fellow OcUKer and although the laptop is great the extra trial software and demos mean the windows install is over 45GB

what im wondering is if i can get a windows 7 OEM disk will i be able to use my asus product code to register it all above board and legal?

if it helps the product is listed with an OA at the end

cheers

Gary

no i mean if you get a retail disk from a 'friend' then your code should work, if you already have an oem disk then give it a try. if you dont have an oem disk then they are about £70

Just download the relevant .iso image from My Digital Life, install Windows as normal (if the key from your laptop doesn't work during install, just leave it blank), then go to activate Windows (Start Menu > right-click on Computer > Windows Activation at the bottom) and enter the key from the bottom of the laptop.

Thankfully Microsoft recently relaxed the rules on activating Windows using the key included with laptops, as previously most laptops required a call using the automated phone system. Not much of an issue for a one-off install, but a pain if you're trying to activate a dozen or more laptops, as I was last year.

For the record, Microsoft also released a tool which will should allow XP to activate laptop serial numbers too. It's worked with the laptops I've tried in the recent past (not that I like XP since Vista and 7 have come along, but 7 just isn't an option on some older PCs).
