I'm trying to repair an iMac that shuts off when the loading bar gets part way along.

Initially was able to get I to recovery with command+r and was able to run a disk check, however now it appears that the keyboard has unpaired itself and even when using a USB PC keyboard, I can no longer make the Mac recognise the key combination.

I removed the HDD and tested it through Seatools on the PC and it passed every test.

Has anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?

Try a blank hard drive? There are instructions on how to rebuild a Mac from bare metal (you may need access to another Mac to create a bootable USB key). The more recent models can rebuild themselves straight off the Internet.

With a blank hard drive I get a flashing folder with a question mark on it now, holding alt and r on a PC keyboard whilst booting up does nothing.

Yes, I've had this particular one before with a failed hard drive which I used internet recovery on.
