Looking at a "cheap as chips" basic system to replace a blown up socket 478 for the kids PC.

Am I right in thinking the Athlon 64's are the current best bang for buck when paying sub £70 for a CPU? Or should I be looking at 775 P4-D's?

Yeah, it's the Athlon 64 chips if you can't stretch to an E6300.

[Edit] I was going to suggest an E4300, however it's more expensive than the E6300?

Are you going to re-use the old Ram etc? If so then you are probably pretty limited in your choice of motherboards also so a socket 939 A64 will give you the most options I think. :)

Choice between A64 and P4D, defeinitely A64.

That's pretty much what I thought. Nah, this is an old 478 jobby with SDRAM!!!

Will be new Board, CPU, RAM and possibley Video card. Want to do the whole lot for sub £200 - max £250 ideally with 1Gb RAM.

btw, it's upgrading a P4D (unsure speed, cba to look), 100MHz 768Mb RAM, GeForce 5700 256Mb

You could fit in an AM2 System for that price.

And its upgradeable.

For example:

Sapphire ATI Radeon X1300 Hyper Memory 512MB DDR2 AVIVO TV-Out/DVI
Asus M2V (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail

£230.25 inc VAT

Even cheaper..

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail
Asus M2V-TVM VIA K8M890 Micro ATX (Socket AM2)
OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit

£188.26 inc delivery.. using motherboard onboard gfx.. this is assuming your kids need now graphics power at all anyway?
