Non standard fans in a ml350 G6 to reduce noise?

The fans in one of our client's servers are going nuts - they go at full whack regardless of temperature. Changes in the bios have no effect. The server's out of warranty and is just used for the phone system and intranet and I just need to find a cheap way of getting the noise levels down. The fans look like standard 92mm jobbies - can anyone think of a reason I couldn't replace them with something like this?:

Cheers.

Cant help with the fans unfortunatly
But have you installed the ACPI drivers? use to get this with some of the older HP servers.
Though the fans were still quite loud!

thank god that trend has now gone!

Indeed - run the ProLiant Support Pack on the server and see if that helps after a driver / firmware update cycle.

If you look in the ILO or System Log are there any warnings about fan failure or temperature cautions?

This is a well-known issue with various HP servers - everything from BIOS versions and drivers and non-HP PCIe cards can be to blame.

With older HP servers that are affected, whenever the temperature goes above a certain threshold the fans spin up as you would expect but they will never spin down again until you reboot. The answer is to either replace the server or make sure it never gets warm! If you have any non-HP PCIe cards you can try and remove those and see if that helps.
