non standard font scripting

hi

i have tried techniqies in the past to use non standard fonts on the web and pretty much always the results have been less than satisfactory... it was always delayed and looked very amateurish...

i came across this website:

and they seem to have an excellent font replacement system in place using php, but because its php i cant get access to have a nose...

does anyone have an inkling as to how this effect is being achieved? or how i can get access to see how they've done it? i'm very impressed

so is there any sort of open source version available to do it myself? i'm not good enough at programming to do anything like that but i would like to implement it...

thanks for the excellent replies guys... could i just clarify some stuff?

firstly, can i do this with a transparent background?

and secondly, i'm not big on php, how do i turn this into effiecient reusable code? i dont want to be writing all that ever time i need some funky text...
