I currently have a laptop, and am in the process of speccing/building a new desktop. I want to be able to connect the two PC's together will eventually setup a proper network (with router), but was considering a simple RJ45 crossover cable initially. However, I have never done any kind of netwrokign before and have a few questions:

1) If both PC's are booted into Windows and I connect a crossover cable between them, what happens ?
2) When connected by crossover, can each PC see the others resources (eg. HD's, OD's etc. ? - What resources can't be seen ?)

You will need to manually set the IP addresses on each PC's network settings:

Something like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 will be best.
Subnet 255.255.255.0...

Setting up windows file and printer sharing is up to you.

Been a while since i've connected two PCs directly. Windows can sometimes be a pain when you connect them directly with a cable.

If you're lucky then Windows will establish a connection between the two PCs automatically, if not then you'll have to run the network connection wizard.

If you right click on folders > properties then click on sharing tab, you can throw stuff into a sharing folder so the other computer can accses it.
