hello all
I recently tried to copy/clone my 1tb ssd onto a 2tb ssd BUT it created the original and a second partition is there a way to make this just one partition.

It wasn't a clone if it's created a 2nd partition. What tool did you use? The software that comes with your new SSD or by the SSD maker will do exactly what's needed within Windows. If it's a Samsung then Samsung Data Migration Tool for example.

I have done it way in the past and I think I used some software but can't remember which one. This time however I bought a device thingy to clone the the 1tb to the 2tb which gave me the partition which I can't extend as its not next to the one I need it next to. I'm aware noobs should maybe not play with this stuff but it's done now and I'm just looking for a way to fix it.

thanks for the help so far

We need more information.

What SSD did you get new? That is the first question because if it's from a maker that has the tool for this then you can simply re-clone using that tool that will clone it correctly then expand the free space to fill the remainder of the new drive as needed in one go.

It sounds like the software you used does not account for a new bigger drive so doesn't expand the partition's space to the new drive's larger capacity - Or at least if it does then the option was not selected. We don't have enough info to know what was done though.

Best idea before doing anything further would be to Post a picture of your drive in Disk management.

For cloning, Macrium Reflect Free edition normally works fine https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree, so if you still have your 1TB drive, it may be easier/quicker to just reclone the drive using that.

https://www.aomeitech.com/aomei-partition-assistant.html will let you move partitions out of the way (e.g. recovery partitions that prevent Windows Disk Managers resize from working), as well as being able to Merge partitions.
