Noob boiler symbol question

I am now officially a homeowner (wohoo!) and as such I have a ever growing to-do list of jobs, things to buy and things to learn.

This should be a very easy one. I have a Vaillant boiler and it has three mode symbols. One sun, one kind of half moon thing, and one timer.

I'm guessing:
Sun = summer mode = heating is completely off?
Half moon thing = winter mode = heating on all the time?
Timer = timer.. pretty obvious.

So, am I right on the summer/winter mode meanings? It has a temperature control and separate on/off switch which confuses me. Specifically, why do I need a summer mode i.e. off if I can just switch it 'off'?

Mode of Operation
By pressing the Dial and rotating different modes for
the auxiliary heating source (boiler) can be selected.
Clock will give control at the times you have set.
Sun will put system “ON” constant with no response
to times programmed into control.
Moon will put system “OFF” with no response to
times programmed into control.
OFF will keep auxiliary heat source and solar pump
off, only the control runs maintaining display and
settings.
