Hi everyone,

I'm about to embark upon my first ever PC build:D I was originally going to buy a custom build but after spending so much time researching the various components I've decided to take the plunge and do it myself. Here is what I intend to build (apologies if there is a specific way to list components I'm also new to the forum):
----------------
Asus Gene-Z Z68
i5 2500k
8gb DDR3 1600mhz C9 (Corsair Vengence)
ATI 6950 2gb (Asus)
60gb SSD (OCZ Agility 3 or Corsair Force 3)
2tb HDD (samsung ecogreen)
850w modular psu (********)
Titan Fenrir Evo
Fractal Design R3
----------------

I guess there are many questions I could ask but really I'd just appreciate any comments you might have, does anything stand out as a serious problem? Btw serious gadget creep has taken hold and I'm pretty much maxing my budget so not much room to play.

I would go with > 100gb SSD for the OS / primary programs, always felt 60ish gig to be tight.

Gen3 board gets another +1 but what about the Asrock Extreme 7 gen 3, it looks the sex :D - price ?

Why the Samsung ecogreen ? You won't be saving that much energy

@stulid
thats quick! thanks man.
Is that MSI board new? Can I ask why you recommend? One of the things I've been wrestling with is whether the whole Smart Response Tec for SSD caching is a good thing or not.

In terms of the RAM the vengence does have those crazy fins, do I just want to get a a normal rectangular looking one?

thanks again

Its the next thing, when Ivybridge is released it supports PCI-E3.0, so once fitted to the board, the slots for the graphics cards then get double the bandwidth, but you obviously need a grpahics card thats also PCI-E3.0, which are the next gen stuff coming from ATI etc, supposedly.

Yep,

XMS3, Vengeance low profile, Kingston

yeah I hear you, I'd love to get a bigger SSD but I'm just already spending more than I'd planned. When I first started looking I didn't even know what an SSD was tbh but now I'm totally sold cos I hate waiting for anything. Would caching be the answer?

I'm not wedded to the Ecogreen its just my mates got one and its a reasonable price. I could get the WD Black

Cheers Stulid

I thought I had something pretty up-to-date with the Gene-z but this stuff doesn't sit still. Another avenue of research for me in the PCI-E3.0, at some point my boss is gonna wonder why I'm not getting any work done.

Thats a Titan Fenrir with tall RAM.

Cool

You can but try - Some people have been disappointed and for myself I've not done this with windows but it works great in the server world

Yeah thats the impression I've got from reading comments. Thing is though I'm already over budget and it looks like a bigger ssd (120gb) is gonna add 60 quid to my build.

If I'm just using it for o/s and commonly used applications could I not just shift whatever game I'm playing at the time into it?

Or just leave Starcraft in it and be done

Thats what I do here, 64GB and a 1TB drive, just install the current games as and when.

Can fit around 5 games on after the OS.

@stulid

right I see, I'll change that up then.

This is good just over half an hour and I've already got some useful tips, I thought I would have to leave this overnight. Talking of which I better get some kip.

Cheers guys

Guess that'll work ... but I thought the more the drive is full ... the harder TRIM needs to work ?

Anyway for myself I'm the other way round - I'm lumbered with a massive primary OS drive and I don't have the time nor inclination to reinstall. So my secondary is an SSD for a couple of games, eclipse, virtual machines, browsers, windows temp/ docs. Machine is always suspended in RAM so Windows fetch does its job admirably
