Hi there,

I am a complete idiot when it comes to games consoles, and this is my first non-accidental trip into your part of the forum, so hi!

Firstly, no flaming each other and getting into fights, I have heard that this happens a lot over here.

OK, so I quite fancy getting a console to occupy some time, as I have learnt the devil makes work for idle thumbs, the hard way, as some of you will know. I haven't ever played a PS3, Xbox (XBOX? x-box? X-Box?) 360, or Wii, bar a 4 minute stint on each the Xbox where I played Pro-Evo and the Wii, where I did a touch of bowling.

I like the idea of a PS3. This is because they look nice. Also, I hear they play these new Blu-ray jobs, and are quiet. I also like F1, and believe they are the only console with F1 games. I hear they have a limited catalogue, but this doesn't bother me as I'd only own 2 or 3 games. I would like to play the new GTA, F1, and another good racing game, but we can spec me games later. Probably Pro-Evo too.

I have a terrible TV, it's about 15 inches big and as many years old. I may buy a new one when I move house, but that won't be for 6 months. Still haven't found a house (but sold this one! Eek.) I hope my tiny TV doesn't matter toooo much, it has a scart job at the back.

I won't play online, I find that a bit silly and it sounds like it could be hard to set up. I'm not very "down with the kids" when it comes to technology. Four controllers might be nice, but by no means essential.

Whatever I buy, should I buy it now? I had a look in a store today and they had lots of deal things and special offers, not sure if this is Christmas/Sales. Will they get cheaper? I've got a busy month ahead, so will be a few weeks before I can play.

Please don't flame each other, but chuck me all the basic advice you can! Feel free to treat me like an idiot. I am. I play my N64 a bit, but I need a new memory card and I don't think I can buy one any more.

Thanks!

Keep the '64. Goldeneye rules.

oh and how could i forget 4 way mario kart with your mates..

:D

I would personally go for the PS3, no hassel gaming and like you say, blueray player aswell. an awesome piece of machine. :)

Hmmm, I appear to not be as stupid as I initially seem.

I'm playing Tony Hawks 2 at the moment, I change game every few days as the console stays on 24/7 (no memory pack anymore :( )

I played Goldeneye a while ago. Really like going through Lylat Wars at the moment. http://youtube.com/watch?v=wIkJvY96i8w

Will they get cheaper any time soon?
EDIT: Do I need a TV bigger than my fist?

I expect, with another 6 months, they will drop to the 250 mark. xbox360s are cheaper however but IMO you get less as a package. I wont go into detail for obvious reasons but if you want to know more a quick search will bring up many an answer :)

Yes you will need a bigger tv... generally less than 32", go for LCD... if its bigger than 32" then go for plasma technology. you will also need one with a high definition input (HDMI), but most new tvs come with these anyway. you can pick up a nice 32"/37" tv for about 500-600 these days. cheaper ones are half that.

i would wait until you get a new tv before buying a next gen console as the graphical capabilities of the new machine will not be portrayed to the full potential on a 15" CRT :)

and yes, Lylat Wars is awesome :D

I see. What about if I use my other TV? Also a CRT type job, with scart, but I'd guess it's 24 inch. It's about 6 years old.

How do you connect the PS3 to the internet? Is it wireless, and are demos free?

Spanx.

Will 24" to scart work though? So I can play until I decide to buy a TV? FWIW I also have a 20" Dell monitor, but I guess that's worse.

Yep, will still work, I think it actually only comes with a scart anyway. Blu Rays will also still play, so you could watch them, they just wouldn't be HD which is the whole point of Blu Ray/HD DVD.

EDIT

The monitor could potentially be better, would allow you to view in HD. Only problem is PS3 doesn't have a VGA connection, so it's not as simple as just plugging straight in.

OK, so if I just started buying bluray, and I'll have them to enjoy when I get a nice TV (which I will. If the misses says no, the 24" might just have an accident when we move... I hear they go bang well.)

Thanks so much for all your advice!

It may have an accident when I switch the bedroom/living room TV over, too. Just at the top of the stairs. While I video it. From 2 angles.

Seriously, what's the crack with this premium malarky? Back in the day, I could walk in and get a PS. Not one of 150 different types! Which version do I want?
