I'm having trouble getting my head round setting up this Edimax EW-7228APN range extender/access point.
I have a functioning wireless network. I have a device (an AV Receiver, if that's important) with an Ethernet port. I have a laptop (Win XP Pro) with functioning wireless and network ports. I want to use the Edimax to link the AV Receiver to the house wireless network. AFAIK this requires a Wireless Bridge, and that's something I was told that the Edimax could be used for.
1) Part of my problem is understanding the vocabulary. I'm not 100% confident that I understand exactly what is meant by- and the differences between- "AP Access point mode" and "Station-Infrastructure" and "AP Bridge-Point to Point" and "AP Bridge-Point to Multi-Point" and "AP Bridge-WDS" and "Universal Repeater" This means I'm not 100% sure of which bit of the instructions I should be following.
I think I should be in Station Infrastructure mode. Following the instructions then that's the only mode that gives me a wireless survey and that "sees" the house wireless network.
2) I understand that the Edimax has its own IP address (192.168.2.2) and that I set up a network connection (via Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)) from the laptop to the Edimax via Ethernet cable to access the Edimax web setup page. I have also entered the house network security settings in to the Edimax set up pages, stored them and rebooted the device.
At this point I was expecting the Edimax to bridge to the house wireless network and allow me to access that as if I'd plugged in an Ethernet connection. But that hasn't happened. I temporarily disabled wireless on the laptop so that only the Ethernet via the Edimax is active. I show a connection in the Network Connections page. But there is no internet access.
Looking at the Edimax settings, this device hasn't been given an IP address from the house wireless router (192.168.0.1) and the Default Gateway info is blank. Should that have happened?
I'm stuck what to try next. Can anyone help please?
