Having posing on this thread last night and reading a few tut's & some on youTube

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18168423

I've managed to get this so far www.garethslade.co.uk

This is my first design ever using PSD via Photoshop and having to slice it and merge it together in Dreamweaver (i have no idea how to code btw)

At the moment it seems fine in FireFox but IE gets an odd white line on the right side & bottom of the page no idea how to get rid of it.

Feel free to give ideas & whatnot i will be slowly revising the site with different versions.

Seems about 25% too wide, and 200% too tall on my 1024x768 screen!

I'm getting the squares where you can see it's been quite clearly spliced up.

That's a very simple design so far, and should be achievable with 80% less markup!

A background image, a header image, and the rest achievable via simple XHTML/CSS.

Looking good so far, but seems pretty large.. a lot of horizontal scroll on my laptop screen!

Yeah im looking to cut it right down - didn't notice how big it was in photoshop in 1600*900 res atm

what browser are you using?

i wouldn't know how to code (or want to code) CSS / XHTML to add background, header etc doing it all via Dreamweaver atm im not looking to be a master coder just a little project while im off work

Am i best to work in 1024*768 to design a website?

Just following this tut at the moment as i like the design

http://psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials/interface-tutorials/create-a-dark-themed-web-design-from-scratch/

But for the life of me can't understand what i need to do at Step 2

Step 2

Now we want to add a stroke and a gradient to the background to give it more depth. Grab your Single Row Marquee Tool and select a row about 400px below the top of the document. Fill your selection with (#1b1b1b). Then make a gradient underneath the stroke. Set your foreground color to (#0d0d0d). Then make a selection 1024px wide x 20px high. With your Linear Gradient Tool selected, make a Foreground to Transparent gradient. Start at the top and end at the bottom of the selection.

Don't know if its me just being a noob

any help on this?

Lol well i took your advice after a few day's / hours of trying to design a site for myself.

Just installed WordPress on my domain etc.

I know there are a lot of free themes out their :)

Is paying for a wordpress theme - a bad idea? i have no coding experance etc and i've come across this website > http://www.photocrati.com

when i see themes to buy i think well whats to stop other people's site looking like mine etc. Do they take the theme off the site once someone has bought it etc?

Not a bad idea at all; especially when, like Photocrati, you've got a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Though I've got little experience in buying/using themes myself, I'd say that paid-for themes are more likely to have all bases/eventualities covered when it comes to the little details.

And in this instance, you're putting some money back into the photography business [well, unless you invoke the money-back guarantee, obviously :D]

Oh, and there's absolutely no shame in using a theme, if that's your angle of questioning. Not everyone has good design skills, and some of those that do have them are prepared to make themes to sell. It's just good [business] sense.

There's nothing to stop other sites looking like yours, though you can alter the appearance of your theme to anything you want. It's all just CSS for styling, and as long as you make the appropriate backups just in case, you can go hog wild with experimentation and learn something in the process :)

No, they wouldn't last long in business if they were selling unique themes for that sort of money :D Some theme sellers will be prepared to sell you exclusive rights to a theme, but it's big money. I wouldn't be too bothered about uniqueness at this stage; your content is what your visitors are after; they're not visiting to pass judgement on your decor ;)

I've never even heard of photocrati before and when/if you pay them £75 etc the templates / themes ofc are still theirs and the themes seem very limted. Does anyone use them on OcUK? Are they worth the expence?
Its a good thing that it gives money back to photography though :D

I know their is no shame in using a theme. Im pants at making a theme. So i shall use the basic wordpress ones for now , but ofc change a few images.

Yeah i see your points about not selling on a theme etc & ofc rights etc.

As with everyone that uses a theme or makes a website i just wan't it to be unique.
