Evening..

So its about 8 years since I last built a pc .. noob question for you..

So I have a shiny new gigabyte pro x570 motherboard... its come with a variety of screws

The motherboard needs 9 screws to fix to the case. The case came pre-installed with spacers. Theres a bunch of screws with rubber washer type things on

But the washers seem too wide, especially to fit one hole which is recessed on the motherboard...

So, do I just use the small little screws to fix the motherboard ? In the past I would have used the type that I only got 4 of in the picture.

What are the rubber washer ones and the long screws for ?

Thanks

i've never used or needed washers its fine without them. As i recall the screw is suppose to make contact with metal around the hole so the motherboard will ground to the case.

Makes sense thanks

Just odd that they only provided 4 of the screws I'd have thought were right for the job so wondered if I was missing something..

The screws with those big rubber washers in them are usually for hard drive mounting, to stop them from rattling in their cage, the rubber washer is noise dampening.

I've never had a motherboard come with screws. Maybe they only come with more expensive boards?

Still; I would expect to use screws that come with the case. In my experience, the motherboard standoffs can take either the screws that fit HDDs or the finer thread screws that would fit into an optical drive.

Trouble with screws coming with a motherboard, is the manufacturer has no idea how many of each type will be needed for the case in question. If what you need is HDD type screws for the motherboard, then it looks like they've only provided four.

Any decent case will have enough screws of all types, so best use them.

I will echo what Marsman said. Use the screws that came with the case to attach the motherboard. Test them out by screwing them into in the standoffs by hand beforehand, just to check you've got the correct thread type screws. Last thing you want is to get the wrong screw stuck in a standoff with your motherboard wedged in between.

Make sure the standoffs are positioned correctly in the case for your motherboard. The standoffs can be repositioned if necessary.

For ATX motherboard, I think there are only 8 motherboard screws, if I recall correctly. The hole in the middle of the motherboard just lines up with a fixed point on the case.

Lastly, when screwing in the motherboard screws, be careful not to over-tighten the screws. This is to avoid the situation where you're undoing the standoff from the case instead on unscrewing the motherboard screw.
