quick question im a student and have a free copy of windows server 2008 standard from microsoft directly for free now obviously this free licence is intended for student use for learning but i have been tasked to build a server for someone and im trying to cut costs where i can? legal wise can i do this for a business?

Also cals? what is this? im new to the whole licencing and im wondering what these are? i saw a standard server and 5 cals.

Im having this feeling that the server operating system i have does not come with the cals which i may need?

thanks guys

Might want to read through this.

Using your free student copy would not be legal for business use.
You will need a cal for each user/device (depending on the CAL)

As has been said, you can't use your free copy for anything other than learning.

A CAL (client access license) is needed for every device or user - you buy either device or user CALs. If they are a charity or academic institution, they will be entitled to much cheaper licensing than retail pricing.

In addition to the server CALs, you generally need a CAL for each product you run on the server, such as Exchange or SQL. What is the server going to be for?

As the other guy's have said you can't use that version for commercial use. Perhaps if you detail what it is you have been asked to build and what they want to do we can help and point you in the right direction... it is wel known that MS licensing is a minefield! To say the least!

learning kitt is much like MDSN licesning basically NFR - Not For Resale, which includes giving it to some one or using for any kind of commericial use

Phil << MLSE and MCP in Licensning for SMB and Enterprise with microsoft :D

As the server isn't for you, have the "customer" fork out for licensing costs. If not don't touch it with a bargepole ;)

(Or use a free equivalent as rz30 suggested)
