Are big new monitors any good??

Would be grateful for some advice from the team here.

I currently have a Viewsonic VP201b 20in monitor that is about 2.5 years old. This is teamed-up with a AMD 4800 X2 / Nvdia 7800 PC which I use for a spot of work and a fair bit of gaming.

I've started sniffing around for potential upgrades and have noticed the current batch of affordable 24in monitors from the likes of Dell and Benq.

Will these monitors represent a significant advance from my VP201b in terms of image quality, colour, speed etc or are they widescreen / bigger versions of essentially the same products I was looking at 2.5 years ago?

Apologies if this is a daft question but I've had a look at some reviews and specifications and at least some of the headline numbers e.g. refresh rates don't look to have changed a great deal. I understand that refresh rates aren't the "be all and end all" for monitors but given roughly equivalent image quality, this is a factor for me.

Are this new batch just bigger or are they better as well and if so, how?

Cheers

Im a noob as well and just bought a new tft....being as your looking 2.5 years down the line, "like me" Im hoping there is and should be a huge improvent in quality and speed. Reading threads on here you will see the Dells are one of the best!!

Just got a Dell 2407 the other week and have to say it is pretty stunning. 24" makes a diff.
My only regret is not affording 2 of them so I can do Landscape and Portrait photographic work with ease. :D

Thanks for your views so far chaps.

On the basis of this I'm not really any further forward though.

Any TFT monitor experts out there able to help out?

Thanks

If you're talking about response times, then the Dell 2407WFP and BenQ FP241W are rated at 6 ms which on paper is faster than your Viewsonic and faster than the previous Dell 24".

However, that may be partly due to the switch from ISO to G2G response time measurement. Baddass knows more about the individual panels these screens use, he should be able to tell you whether the Dell is genuinely faster than your Viewsonic.
