Hi everyone.

this is my first attempt at building a computer and while im fine with the actual assembly im having the most trouble with actual part selection:confused:




sorry about that, didnt read the rules :P

i dont have an actual budget as such as ill be purchasing parts on a monthly basis i.e when i get paid.

roughly £600-700? for light gaming and general use

thank you thats perfect. ive got all the peripherals i.e mouse keyboard tv/monitor and speakers. ive not budgeted for the os but thats the last thing ill buy as i know im going for windows 7. just needed the spec laid out.

light gaming as in minecraft, my current netbook runs it at about 10fps so i decided to just get a decent computer as ive not had one before.
 
i know, ive always wanted a decent pc and it was the fact that my netbook couldnt run minecraft that spurred me on to do somthing about it. this pc when complete will last me a good while and ill upgrade it slowly as i go to keep it up to date.

i picked up the motherboard today from OCuk while out with my mate. fortunatly for him he happened to have a spare £1200 that he had saved up and just specd his system to be built and will be picking it up in a couple of days or so, must be nice :P

its so nice to see a mobo without all the dust.

the guy at the counter was very helpful and didnt laugh when he saw how little i actually knew about checking for damage. he said

"do you want to check the pins for damage?"

my response was "erm yea? pins?" i removed it from the box and the wrapping and then said "oh it smells nice" :confused:

he then showed me what to look for and also what to be wary of when installing the cpu.

And the 100mhz base clock difference is neither here nor there; you'll be overclocking it to 4.4-4.6Ghz anyway...

im hopefully going to purchase the cpu this thursday, and i was pretty convinced i was going to get the i5 2550k

are you saying i shouldnt?

so i should get the i5 2500 and over clock it?

the hardest part ive found so far is trying to work out what i should actually buy lol.

what sort of psu should i be going for? would a decent 650w item do the job?

Integrated graphics as a backup is great.

The 2550k is basically a 2500k with the graphics core disabled (because it was faulty or whatever) and the multiplier set to 34 instead of 33, giving it the 3.4Ghz base clock.

With either you're going to overclock it to 4.4-4.6Ghz anyway, so why would you NOT go for the 2500k?

i was going off the first parts list that was posted and i didnt notice that the 2500k changed to 2550k in the second parts suggestion, i had the i5 2500k in mind originally anyway.
 
right ok, so the i5 2500k is on the list now. should i worry about a sound card? ive dismissed it so far as i wont be using the computer for music to often, but i will be using it for movies. would it be worth getting a decent sound card or would it make no odds?

my current setup is ive got a hd telly that has inputs for VGAx1 hdmi x1 and audio line in.

speakers are logitec Z313 2.1 speakers. the TV doesnt have an audio output so im using the headphone socket and the sound so far is great.

i guess ill have to wait and see, i cant see it being bad sound though
 
the computer case has arrived

feels very sturdy and there is very spacious. it came with 2 fans. 200mm front fan and 120mm fan rear. i also have the option to install a 200mm fan on top or two 120mm fans and also either a 120mm or 140mm on the side. im going to e installing some foam dust filters on all vents to keep the dust away

im going to try my best with it and try to do the hidden/minimal wiring thing people do with cars. ive got a few ideas on how to do it but i will have to wait till all the components have been sourced.


yea im happy with the its ive got so far. the motheboard that i got which was spec'd for me on here is far superior than one i was looking at before, and cheaper!

ive got a spare 250g hdd which i will use for a while before i upgrade it to a bigger hdd+ssd. ive got a dvd recordale disc drive too but im also going to get a blueray recorder and player

yea its sata

its a western digital WD2500. it seems fairly decent for a drive ive owned for around 6yrs. will certainly do for getting the pc up and running till i can afford a better one. i was nosing in the clearance section though and noticed a 1tb hdd for £69 so im interested in that
 
thats ok then. im thinking of going water cooled too, partly for reliability and that it will take the heat straight out of the case instead of blowing it inside like a normal cpu cooler but also because it sounds cool.

the top of my case allows for a 240mm radiator and also has rear rubber retaining holes that allow water cooling pipes to pass through to the top of the case.
