noob needing spec check

the top of my case allows for a 240mm radiator and also has rear rubber retaining holes that allow water cooling pipes to pass through to the top of the case.

You maybe able to fit the rad inside with two fans, depends how much room you have from the top of the board.

im starting to shy away from water cooling, my mate showed me a few vids of water cooled systems vs air cooled and for my needs i have to say that water cooling isnt needed and is just an unecsesary expense, that couple with the fact his system will be largely the same with the same cpu and his system is running great at low temps.

ive been nosing at this air cooler setup. thoughts?

Right then, that Noctua is indeed one of the top 3/4 air coolers on the market (possibly even the best)

But for the rest of your system spec and indeed mostly the motherboards capabilities at overclocking its a bit OTT for you, a cheaper £25-30 cooler will be a more sensible purchase and free up money that can be spent else where to make a performance increase ( GFX card maybe?)

So with that in mind,

The 6870 is a bit faster in some games and slower in others, but I prefer Nvidia cards/drivers.
