Noob needs help with gigabit lan

Hi guys, Ive just built a new system (spec below) & I want to connect to the internet but Ive never used gigabit lan before. What hardware do i need to get going as it currently says I have a network cable unplugged. I'm using a Netgear router DG834GT/GTB. Many thanks for your help.

It doesnt matter if its Gigabit or 10/100. The only real difference is the maximum speed it can support. Just connect them as normal and it should work fine. The network cable unplugged could mean you have more than one ethernet, or it could be firewire (IEE1394).

If you get a gigbit router and another gigabit enabled PC, then you will be able to transfer the files quicker, but when it comes to internet, it wont make a difference.
 
Ive installed everything on the disc that was supplied with the MB. I'm using a very old AGP P4 setup atm for my current access to the net would this be confusing the new setup?
 
ok now i'm confused. Its just appeared to be working...I say that but i havent established any sessions yet. I'll try connecting to the net & go from there. TY for the replies, I may be back :D
 
If you've got drivers for the card installed and have it plugged into the router then you shouldn't need to do any config - it should autodetect and work pretty much out of the box.
