noob networking question

hi all,

will be making the switch to virgin meadia soon when i get the cable modem they supply is it possible to rig this up to a gigabit switch and have the internt over all machines connected or do i need a router?

Hi you will need to get a router to have multiple machines connecting on the cable connection.

You need a router like the Linskys WRT54GL that uses a WAN Ethernet connection, ADSL routers will not work with cable

i know that adsl routers wont work but i was wondering if i could get away with using a switch, obviosly not so looks like a new router

The Belkin router I was using acted as a 4 port switch, that’s how I was trying to share the connection from the Virgin box but it wasn’t having any of it, after a lot of messing about / reading & posting on here the conclusion was you can only use a WAN router.
