Very good for first shots, looking at the exif it even looks like you've dialled in some EC. 1/400 and F4 is about right for the conditions (maybe use a higher aperture like F8 as he has a long nose) and the fact he's not going to be still so 1/400 is good. You got down to his level which is a very good way to take pet shots.

Technically it's good, artistically I'd say look in to the rule of thirds and read up about composition in general. Also, always focus on the eyes, if the eyes are even slightly out of focus it can ruin an otherwise great shot. Here it looks like his nose was the main focus point and luckily the aperture used means that his eyes don't look too out of focus.

Thanks I will take all you have said onboard. Some nice encouraging feedback there.
I have ordered a book,

Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Paperback) by Bryan Peterson.

I have heard good things about this book. Must say I am really enjoying myself.

Hopefully there is a nice chapter on composition.:)

I'm reading Understanding Exposure Revisited at the moment, great book, just need to decide which kit to buy now :)

Nice pics!

Top one you've ovcer exposed the dogs chest. This is very tricky with black and white dogs in sunlight.

You can use the histogram to check exposure. You want the histogram to be as far right as possible but without clipping. Then in software you can bring it back to center. The higher exposures have more more resolution than the lower exposures.

Thanks for all the postive feedback.DSLR is daunting to say the least, and to have feedback on my first pics in a positive way has really given me some confidence.

:)

There ok for 1st shots, looks like you were playing with different DOF abit, and nice shots of your dog, which is great for you, but as pictures themselves they have no impact, just a picture of a dog to everyone else.

But thats the key thing, just get out there and keep at it, try maybe 'having ago' at different genre, landscape, macro etc, and get a set of pics and see what you think
