Noob OC Setting Questions

Hope someone can help me get my head around what settings I should be using to test OCing my rig. I've been reading up on this all day, but it's confusing the hell outta me as this is my first time at it.

Here's my setup...

Asus P5w-DH Deluxe with BIOS 2302
E2200 with stock cooling (until I get round to getting something better)
4 GB of Corsair XMS2 5400

Currently according to CPUZ it's all running at 200.8 x 11 = 2208, with a Rated FSB of 802.8MHz (although I don't get what the Rated FSB part means yet). The Core Voltage shows as 1.280V... I guess this is the value I may need to change as I increase the FSB and RAM values..?

I gather I'm supposed to set the RAM to run at a ratio of 1:1 with the CPU, which I do by setting it to twice whatever the FSB is....? So, does this mean that I should be determining my FSB in terms of what my RAM is capable of? If so, how can I work out how far I can push the RAM, so that I can then determine what the FSB will be? Or should I be working out my FSB first, and then doubling that in order to get the RAM setting?

Sorry if this is uber-noobish... but I'm an OC virgin ;)
 
The FSB is a single universal figure. in your care, 200. Each part has its own multiplier.

The mobo has a 4x multiplier called Quad Pumping and is fixed. Hence Giving you the 800MHz FSB on the mobo.
Your CPU has its multiplier set to 11. these can be changed, but usually only down, so leave it at 11 (i dont know the e2200 multi settings, so someone please feel free to correct me)
RAM has its own multiplier which goes up in smaller ammounts, usually something like 2, 2.333, 2.5, 2.66, 3, 3.5 etc and can be changed. your RAM is rated to 667Mhz although can go higher

To keep things simple, first you want to OC your CPU but keep the RAM down. That way if it doesnt work there are less components to worry about. At the stock 200Mhz speed of your CPU the ideal settings for your mobo would be:

CPU 200x11 = 2200Mhz
Mobo 200x4 = 800Mhz
RAM 200x3.33 = 667Mhz

Your mobo (i think) is rated up to 1066Mhz FSB (although, as with everything, they go higher) so yo get your mobo up to that you would set the FSB to 266 and drop the RAM multiplier to keep it at 667 (x2.5):

CPU 266x11 = 2926Mhz
Mobo 266x4 = 1066Mhz
RAM 266x2.5 = 667Mhz

At these settings the Mobo and RAM are at stock, and the CPU is overclocked to 2.9Ghz. another setting could be:

CPU 300x11 = 3300Mhz
Mobo 300x4 = 1200Mhz
RAM 300x2.2 = 667Mhz

Now your CPU is at 3.3Ghz and your mobo is at 1200Mhz FSB (dont worry, mobos go up ok, mines at 1600 although its rated to 1066). At these clocks however, you may have to adjust your volts. An area im no expert in, and wouldnt recomend for a new overclocker. You should be able to read the 266Mhz FSB speeds without any volt mods (my E6400 went from 2.1Ghz to 3.2Ghz without any changes to volts).

Then of course once you get your CPU to a nice level, you can bring the RAM but by changing the multiplier. These settings depend on whats available to you on your mobo. but basically:

FSB is a single number.
For CPU, multiply by the CPU mulitplier to get clock speeds. This multi can be changed
For RAM, multiply by the RAM multiplier to get clock speeds, This multi can be changed
For Mobo, multiply by 4 to get Quad Pumped Mobo FSB, This cannot be changed

(obviously, all these settings are just to explain. You will first want to go up by small ammounts and test for heat etc, ill let a proper OCer come allong and tell you their prefered way to stress test an OC, as they vary a lot)
 
Thanks... was thinking of getting one of these. Hope it's not noisy. Does it come with any TIM or should I grab some at the same time?

Had a play around with the first settings Skeeter suggested above, and although I can boot Windows, it's unstable under load as running Orthos causes a reboot almost immediately so had to revert to stock. Not sure if it's related to temps or not. Might just order the Freezer 7 Pro and leave my PC running at stock until it arrives.
 
I use one l can,t hear it at full speed.

Had another play around with this and changed the CPU voltage to just under 1.35ish and everything seems to be working now... My E2200 is now ticking over at 3GHz . Orthos has been running for 4½ hours without any errors - think I will leave it overnight to make sure it's OK.

Temps according to Core Temp are at 69° which is a bit higher than I'd have liked, so I've ordered the Freezer 7 Pro... should be here on Tuesday hopefully.
